A PLAGUE OF TICS

This story is about a boy who goes through many different types of "tics". He has to touch his nose to everything and kiss everything in order to be satisfied in his mind. If he didn't kiss of touch something it would bother him very much until he did it. He had no parental support on his problems. When his teachers would talk to his mom about it, she would just offer the teacher a drink and make the teacher forget about his problems. His dad wasn't a very big help either. He would yell at him for doing things, and not get him any medical help. His problems got a lot worse over the years, through high school and into college. The thing that helped him stop being so compulsive was when he learned about smoking. Smoking got his mind of the things he had done all his life, and made him better in a way. I liked this story because it was interesting and at sometimes funny.

1.The main (broad) question i plan to answer in my research paper is How has communication shaped society and influence all the different technological communications advances from the past one hundred years? The way communication is used today is much different then back then and i plan to analyze that.

2.My thesis statement is most likely going to change through the process of this paper but i plan to analyze the communication differences between the present and the past, how communication technology plays a major part in shaping a society, and how media communication shapes us.

3. After putting what i already know, with doing minor research on communication i realized that communication has changed dramatically over the past one hundred years, and this intrigues me because i want to live in the life where none of this technology is around and see what it would be like. There was never any immediate way to communicate with someone with out being face to face before cell phones, and now we can see someones else face right in the palm of your hand. We have come a long way since mailing letters to one another. Now we have televisions to see what exactly is going on in the world, and other things on the television influence people in a major way. The media is huge communication factor that shapes the way view this world. Not only has communication in the form of technology changed, but the way we speak face to face is different because of technology. It is a lot easier to say something to someone over a cell phone or through the computer then it is face to face and that alone has changed society and the way people "talk".

 4.I need to find out the route technoloy has taken to get to the point where we are now. I also am going to try and  find out how a language works and how the English language has changed because of technology. Also, i would like to find out what ways technological communication has helped our society.

Laugh tracks

While reading Chuck Klostermans article about laugh tracks i was able to get a perspective on Americans and their laughter. I agree with Chuck on the things he says. Laugh tracks are just shows that force laughter, and it doesn't come natural. He talked about the people that live in Germany aren't like Americans in the sense of laughter. They only laugh at things that are truly funny to them unlike us Americans that laugh at anything even if we don't find it funny. I don't understand the need for laugh tracks, i think their stupid and boost the confidence of the actor just because they hear laughs so they will think they are funny. If there is no laugh track i think it makes the show more real and easier to find funny. For example "Family Guy" is the funniest show out there and it doesn't have a laugh track. Because its so raw and crazy it makes it hilarious. I am not a big fan of sitcoms like "Two and a Half Men", or "Friends" simply because i don't find them funny. The only show that i actually liked that had a laugh track was "Home Improvement". Basically because Tim Allen cracks me up.

Topic for research paper

I was going to chose my topic based on the nursing field but i want to do something that i have been interested in knowing more about. I'm going to do the research on technology and the influence it has on communication. communicating with others is something we never even have to think twice about doing it just comes natural. But what if there were no cell phones or computers, would we be able to survive? Technology has become such a huge way we communicate to people and without it where would we be in this world. I plan to analyze how over years and years communication has changed not only the way we speak but how we “talk” to others via text message and emails. I plan to show the differences between now and then on how people talked to one another. Do you think there is  a difference between sitting behind a screen and typing words to someone or actually saying those words to someone in person. Which leads me to think is technology actually helping us with our communication skills or is it in reality destroying us and making it even harder for people to communicate to others in public. My goal for this project and is find out what has caused the way we talk to others to change within the last hundreds of years. Not only the way we talk to each other but all the different languages there are out there for people to communicate. Technology is able to also identify all the different languages when either using the computer or cell phone. But imagine if we were all cut off from technology. No computers, cell phones, ipads, ipods or anything that we could use to communicate with one another. What would we do with ourselves? Have to rely on sending a letter to someone to talk to them,which is exactly what people used to do. I want to analyze all the different ways we communicated up till now. It’s amazing to think throughout the time period of twenty years I’ve been alive how many different ways and stages we have gone through to get to where we are now with communicating.

The article that my professor provided me with is a good article called Caring for Dying Children: Assessing the Needs of the Pediatric Palliative Care Nurse. It talks about the studies that clarify the needs for sick, dying children and their families. While describing the needs of  these children and families, it also shows the history and future of palliative nursing care. Palliative care nursing is basically taking care of a dying child physically and mentally. Physically, they have to treat their pain and make them feel as comfortable as possible. Mentally, they must keep help the child cope with what is going on as well as helping the family cope. Not only does a dying patient play a role in their own and families life it also takes its toll on the nurse. The palliative nurse must know how to control all their emotions when a child dies, and also be able to limit the stress that it may cause on them.

Attached to Technology and Paying a Price.

After reading the article it started to scare me about how things are going to be different in the future. Kids now are constantly on the computer or on the phone and like Connor in the story it could cause concentration problems for children. I'm pretty much torn weather or not technology is a forward step for humans or a backwards one. In the article it talks about how multitasking people did worse when it came to recognizing if the red rectangles moved. This kind of shows us that multitasking isn't always the best choice for us. When technology gets even more advanced then what it is now the whole argument about how it can affect someones relationship and family is going to get a lot worse. Yes, the internet is good for looking things up that you dont know but all the social networks and such things can ruin someone. They might always have the computer on their mind and not able to concentrate on things that matter like work and school. from a personal point of view i think technology is out of control and it controls peoples lives.

Introduction

My name is Nathan Ott, and i am a nursing major here at IUP. This is my first ever blog post so this is sort of a learning experience for me. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and love it there. I enjoy many things, such as sports (playing and watching), video games, movies and things of that sort. This is the end of my first ever blog and I would like to end it with a GO STEELERS!!!!!
